The Tuckahoe Orthopaedic Associates MRI Center is accredited by The American College of Radiology. The Stand-UpTM MRI scanner at Tuckahoe Orthopaedics is the only one of its kind in Central Virginia. The new technology it affords is ideal for all patients including children. Its front-open and top-open design makes it the most non-claustrophobic whole-body scanner available. This MRI scanner provides an exceptional degree of comfort and flexibility. Unlike traditional scanners that require patients to lie down and pass through a narrow tunnel, the Stand-Up MRI scanner allows patients to stand, sit, bend or lie down for the most accurate diagnosis of each individual’s symptoms. During the procedure patients can watch TV or close their eyes and relax. Additionally, because of the scanner’s open design it is ideal for claustrophobic patients and young children, typically allowing them to be scanned without the use of sedation.

The stand-up/positional MRI scanner can provide a more detailed assessment than does the traditional lie-down only MRI units. It is critical that a physician understands the full extent of a patient’s condition, and differences in body structure between upright and lying down positions can reveal clinically significant problems. The upright, multi-positional unit at Tuckahoe Orthopaedics can provide scans of all parts of the body, including the spine and joints, in multiple positions including standing in a weight-bearing state, thus giving the physician a more exact diagnostic test. This unique technique may enable the physician to diagnose a condition which might have gone undetected by a conventional MRI.
